Flu season while trying for a baby

May 12, 2021

When you are trying to conceive or are pregnant, looking after your health and wellness is vital. We know that this time can be made a little more challenging with the arrival of flu season.  During this time, it is common to question the risks involved with influenza and the vaccine. Fret not, we want to give you the information you need for peace of mind so you can focus on your journey ahead.

Is it safe to get the flu vaccine?

The flu vaccine is considered perfectly safe. In fact, according to the Australian Department of Health, pregnant women and those trying to conceive are strongly recommended to receive an influenza vaccine in each pregnancy.

People who received the flu vaccine before becoming pregnant should also be revaccinated during pregnancy to protect their baby. This is because vaccinating during pregnancy will also protect your infant from influenza in the first 6 months of life due to the transplacental transfer of influenza-specific antibodies.

For peace of mind, we encourage you to consult with your fertility specialist prior to getting the flu vaccine.

Can the flu vaccine give you the flu?

This is a myth. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu.

The minimal symptoms sometimes experienced following vaccination are linked to the generation of an immune response.  Vaccines work by training the body to recognise the virus and build immunity against it so that it can combat it effectively when it encounters the real thing.

Staying healthy

To keep in good health on your journey to parenthood, there are a number of things you can do.

  • Clean your hands – wash, sanitise and be vigilant.
  • Get enough rest – sleep is critical to maintaining good health as your body is more likely to fall ill when tired.
  • Exercise – getting regular exercise is important regardless of season but staying active during this time helps boost immunity.
  • Stay nourished – incorporating fresh produce into your diet is always important but boosting vitamin C not only keeps the immune system strong but aids fertility too.
